9/26/2013 0 Comments Understanding The Common CoreAll over the country, parents are becoming more and more angry about something known as the Common Core. Have you heard of this curriculum that seems to have been adopted everywhere in the United States? According to this blog post, the Common Core is, " a massive effort to transform K–12 education in America by creating tough new standards for what kids should know and be able to do at each grade level—and tough tests to go along with them." The Common Core is upsetting some parents to the point of being placed under arrest, as was the Baltimore father who tried to get some questions answered about it at a parent/administration meeting. This isn't the first time this type of thing has been tried in America. In fact, in the 80's and 90's, educators tried to implement a "Common Core" type theme to our kids' education, only to have their efforts fall flat before too long. The method that seems to be working the best (at least the one that makes the most people happy) is to allow each state to design its own plan for education. However, that plan goes against the basic premise of the Common Core. Although states are free to pull out of the plan, and some already have, educators are hoping that most states will remain with it. There has never been a better time to attend a Christian School. We are so fortunate to have a private, Christian school in Horseheads. At Foundations Christian School, our kids get a personalized education plan that works for them. Each child is seen as an individual who learns differently than the child standing next to him. Our teachers are completely focused on helping each child succeed in the way that he or she does best, which is one reason why Foundations Christian School is such a great place to be. If your kids are attending public school, and you're upset about the Common Core, you're not alone. Many parents have even complained that it's impossible to help their kids with their homework because the methods of teaching have changed so much in recent years. There is a place to go where you can escape the Common Core. If you've been thinking about enrolling your child in Foundations Christian School, there's never been a better time than now. We can offer your kids an affordable, Christ-centered education that will provide them with a solid foundation for the rest of their lives. If you'd like to know more, contact us today.

We are now in our third week of school, and at Foundations Christian School, we hope that your family has settled into their new routine. We have so many things going on at Foundations Christian School, it's hard to know where to begin. During the last few weeks, we were excited to be able to get started with studying the arts. Providing the students with music classes and art classes is very important to us here at Foundations Christian School, and we know that you as parents appreciate us being able to offer these classes as well. We are so blessed to have so many talented parents within our midst. Carrie Alo gives of her musical talents every Monday morning to instruct the children in music. The children are busily putting together a Christmas program that they know you'll enjoy. While it might seem strange to think about Christmas right now, it's actually right around the corner! Our art classes are being taught by Adam Nugent, and the kids are excited about what he has in store for them. All parents were asked to purchase some things for art supplies this week, including colored chalk, markers, construction paper, paint brushes and water color paints. Please make sure your children have these items before their art class on Thursday. If your child is not a Foundations Christian School student, we'd love to talk to you about what a Christian education can offer your child. Foundations Christian School will provide your child with a solid, Biblical foundation that will serve as the compass for their lives. We'd love to answer any questions you might have, and your child can start anytime. Our Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser was a great success, and we have all of you to thank for that. We were so fortunate to have gotten so many great donations from area businesses for our auction, and the dessert auction was simply out of this world!
Fundraisers are going to be very important to our school as we go forward throughout the school year. We want to be able to provide the best curriculum for our students, and we want to be able to compensate our teachers well for all of the hard work that they do. We will be having frequent fundraisers because it's our goal to raise as much money as we can to make our school even better. The next fundraiser will take place in November. We'll be selling fudge, and this fundraiser has been a great success for other groups in the past. That means we have high hopes for a great sale! Of course, none of these fundraisers is possible without the helping hands of our parents, as well as those who believe in the mission of Foundations Christian School. We hope that you'll lend a hand to help us during the sale, and we know it will be difficult to resist purchasing some fudge for you and your family. Especially after you see how delicious it is! We'll have more information on future fundraisers in upcoming blog posts, and don't forget to check our Facebook page frequently to keep up to date on everything we're doing at Foundations Christian School. We've had a great start to the year, and we know it's only going to get better. Our first "week" of school was a great success! Unlike public schools, at Foundations Christian School, we have the ability to slow things down a bit. It's kind of nice being a small school, although, we're really excited about the growth that we know God has for us in the near future. During the first week of school, our teachers were able to take the time and really get to know the students well. We really feel that it's important to talk with each student and learn what he or she likes or doesn't like about school. Many of our students have to us from a public school education, so they were quite unfamiliar with this technique. It was our goal to get to know each student as an individual. We learned a lot about how each of them learns the best, which subjects they really like, and which ones give them the most problems. This is allowing us to tailor their education to suit their needs. It's exciting to hear things like, "I'm getting through a whole lesson in one day! In public school, a lesson would have taken me four days!" There's something to be said about a smaller school and a Christian education. We're on the right track! Now that the first full week of school is here, the students are digging into their studies. They're all excited about the things they're learning, and we're thrilled to see them grow in their faith, as well as in their education. We hope that you'll join us this Thursday evening for our first fundraiser of the year. Our Spaghetti Dinner will be a great success, and we're grateful that you will be a part of it. For more information on the dinner, please check out this blog post. If you're not satisfied with the education your child is getting, it might be time to think about a change. We'd love to talk to you about what we can offer your cchild What kid doesn't love spaghetti? In fact, what adult doesn't love spaghetti? We'd love your help! And we're going to feed you too! Foundations Christian School will be holding a Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser to help fund the curriculum for our new school. Where else can you take your family out for a great dinner for $20 or less? That's right! The cost of the dinner is only $5 for adults, $2 for kids, with a family maximum of $20. Not only will you get to have a wonderful night out with your family, but you'll also be supporting a wonderful cause. Foundations Christian School exists because we believe in an affordable, quality, Christian education for our kids. Even if you don't have a student attending Foundations Christian School, we'd love to have you join us. You'll enjoy an auction with many items from local businesses, as well as a delicious dessert auction. The Spaghetti Dinner will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2013 from 4:30 to 7:30. We're so excited about this new school year, and we can't wait to see what God has in store for us as we do His work within our children. If you'd like more information about having your kids attend a private school that's focused on a Godly education, contact us today! As I write this blog post, it's the wee hours of the morning on the first day of school. It isn't time to wake my kids up yet, but I wonder if they've slept at all. I remember when I was a kid. I was always excited on the first day of school. I'm sure my parents were excited too, although this day brought about some mixed feelings in them. We always had wonderful summers together in my family, complete with a vacation to Florida every year. It's hard to see that time slip away into the new school year.
On this day, you might be experiencing some mixed feelings, just like my parents did. I have three kids attending Foundations Christian School in Horseheads, New York. My two oldest have done the "school thing" before. My youngest has not. Yes, I have a preschooler. He's thrilled about the idea of starting his new school. He can't wait to get to his class and meet all of his new friends. He's beyond excited to meet his teacher. He's heard so much about school from his older brothers and sister over the past couple of years, and now it's finally going to be his turn to be a big boy and go to school. And I'll be all alone, all day. Can you relate? It's a mixture of happiness for your child, and a little bit of sadness because your baby is growing up. Even as my older kids get dressed in their new school clothes to head out the door, I feel a little pang of...something. It's hard to put into words. They're all getting older. They're growing up, and they're doing it so fast. Nothing reminds me of this as much as the first day of school. However, this year, things are a little bit different. Yes, I know that they're still growing up, and they're still a year older than they were last year when we were in this place in our lives. But this year they're able to take part in a Christian education, which they weren't able to do last year. I think that makes a big difference. At Foundations Christian School in Horseheads, New York, the focus is always on keeping God at the center of everything we do. I feel better knowing that my kids will be receiving a solid education that's grounded in Scriptural truth. While it's hard to let my little guy go, he'll be getting his start in school the right way. He'll learn about God's plans for his life at an early age from me, and those lessons will be reinforced when he goes to school. What an answer to prayer! Parents, as you send your kiddos off to school this morning, you'll feel a bit of a loss as they go. There's no doubt about that. However, know this: Your kids have a bright future. Your son or daughter is a leader in the Kingdom of God, and your family is on the cusp of discovering what that means for your child. This is a wonderful time, and we are blessed beyond measure to have Foundations Christian School. If you'd like to know more about Foundations Christian School, contact us! We'd love to talk to you about what a difference a Christian education can make for your child. Believe it or not, the first day of school is tomorrow. If you're like most of us parents, you've probably been enjoying a wonderful summer with your families, and having their physicals done before school starts probably hasn't even crossed your mind. It's OK! There's still time to get your kids into their doctors for their physicals before they get too involved in their school activities. It's also important to schedule a visit to the dentist so that you're aware of any potential problems early on.
At Foundations Christian School, we know how important it is to make sure your children see their doctor and dentist on a regular basis. Some children have asthma that kicks in once the cooler weather hits. Even though we're still experiencing temperatures in the 70's most days, it won't be long and the crisp autumn air will be blowing. If your child needs an inhaler, it's a good idea to already have one at the school before a problem arises. Likewise, a toothache can cause a lot of problems for a child in class, not to mention, they're incredibly painful and distracting. Making sure they see their dentist will give you the assurance that everything is fine. We want you to know that you've made an excellent choice in your child's education. Choosing Foundations Christian School in Horseheads, New York means that you believe in a Christ-centered, private education for your child. We agree whole-heartedly. We're looking forward to an amazing school year, and if you've been putting off getting your child enrolled, don't worry. We're accepting applications all year long.
